Miles Johnston

 Dark Surrealism

When it comes to creating artwork that is both deeply beautiful and emotional, there is no other artist like Miles Johnston. Being a powerhouse of craftsmanship while maintaining a focus on concepts that resonate, miles has created a body of work that penetrates deep into his viewers souls. His work is unforgettable and to top it all of, he creates many of his pieces using graphite.

I think that Miles represents a new generation of artists, with a great balance of craft, concept and creative freedom he can do things that artists before him could never have imagined. Pulling inspiration from the mind bending creations of Mc Escher and combining it with his own introspective personality, we get an experience that can only be described as magic. If you like the work, make sure to get on his mailing list at the bottom of this page. (A mailing list is more powerful than any social media because you are guaranteed to receive direct communication, while apps like Instagram and Facebook limit the reach of content creators)

Are you feeling mind blown?

Feeling skeptical about this actually drawn using pencils?

Well lets put your skepticism to rest with this amazing timelapse video

Here we get a glimpse into the process that Miles uses, he openly shares his concept sketches and rough work along side the final piece to show the importance of the idea. It is clear in his work that he puts a lot of thought into the idea and that his work would resonate even without the amazing rendering. His work is filled with visual metaphors that can only be depicted in a visual format. He has taken 2D illustration to its highest form by creating work that takes full advantage of illusion. I would guess that if Mc Escher was alive today, he would be pulling inspiration from Miles’ work.

Oil Paintings

Not only is Miles adept at working in black and white but he also creates equally jaw dropping artwork using oils
